Mobile internet users in Tibet hit 2.97 million

Data from the Communications Administration of the Tibet autonomous region showed that the information and communication industry in Tibet was in smooth operation and saw steady growth in the total amount of telecommunications business in 2022. As of November 2022, Tibet's telecom business had accumulated a total of 5.52 billion yuan (calculated based on the constant unit price in 2021), an increase of 15.01 percent over the same period in 2021, and the region also saw fixed asset investment of 2.14 billion yuan in telecom.

The total number of telephone users in the region reached 4.14 million, of which the total number of fixed-line telephone users reached 859,100 and that of mobile phone users reached 3.3 million. The number of mobile internet users reached 2.98 million, and the number of 5G users hit 798,100, an increase of 131,900 compared with the end of the previous year.

The number of fixed broadband internet users reached 1.28 million, of which FTTH/0 users reached 1.26 million, accounting for 98.08 percent of the total and a net increase of 133,900 compared with that at the end of 2021. The number of broadband users with a speed above 100Mbps reached 1.21 million, a year-on-year increase of 17.59 percent, and the number of IPTV users reached 752,200, with a year-on-year growth rate of 30.77 percent.

The telephone penetration rate in the whole region is 112.98 units/100 people. Among them, the penetration rate of fixed-line telephone is 23.47 units/100 people, that of mobile phone is 89.51 units/100 people, that of 4G is 56.97 units/100 people, that of 5G is 21.81 units/100 people, and the penetration rate of mobile internet is 81.33. 

In terms of communication capability development, the region now boasts 60,500 mobile phone base stations. There are 2.85 million internet broadband access ports, including 2.74 million FTTH/0 ports, accounting for 96.08 percent of the total. There are 2.41 million urban broadband access ports, a year-on-year growth rate of 15 percent and an increase of 306,600 from the end of 2021. The number of rural broadband access ports reached 442,300.

Telecom enterprises in Tibet have made efforts to increase speed and reduce fees for their services. Their service packages dedicated to poverty alleviation and assistance to the disabled and the elderly have benefited a total of 227,300 users, giving up a cumulative profit of 221 million yuan. The average decrease in corporate broadband service fees was 19.8 percent, and the corporate private line service fees were 14.7 percent lower on average.
