As of now, 662 townships and 4,382 administrative villages in Tibet are connected by hardened roads, accounting for 95 percent and 78.76 percent of the total respectively, according to the Transportation Department of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
In 2022, a record-setting fund of 36.7 billion yuan ($5.29 billion) allocated by the central government was invested in Tibet's transportation sector, with 16.39 billion yuan for road transportation fixed asset investment. The mileage of highways opened to traffic increased by 720 kilometers throughout the year, which brought the total mileage of Tibet highways to 121,400 kilometers.
Focusing on rural vitalization, Tibet's transportation sector has made continuous efforts in construction, management, maintenance and operation of roads in rural areas. In 2022, 185 road projects were launched to remove transportation barriers between townships and administrative villages. Maintenance projects, such as the renovation of 117 rundown bridges and the refinement of safety infrastructures along 2,787 kilometers of roads, have also been implemented. A total of 612 townships and 3,705 administrative villages in the region now have access to buses, accounting for 90.5 percent and 69.8 percent of the total respectively. Tsona county was named a demonstration county of the national drive to improve rural roads.
The transportation sector saw 3.98 million passenger trips and 39.33 million tons of freight in 2022. Qualified high-grade highways are now fully open to trucks and six new transportation material storage centers for second-grade highways have been established in the region .
In 2023, Tibet's transportation department aims to secure 40 billion yuan of fund allocated from the central government and to invest 26.3 billion yuan in fixed assets; the total mileage of highways is expected to reach 124,000 kilometers, and the number of townships and administrative villages connected by hardened roads is to reach 95.55 percent and 82.53 percent respectively.
In addition, Tibet will speed up the improvement of the transportation planning system. In 2023, it plans to complete the formulation of the " Comprehensive Transportation Network Planning of the Tibet Autonomous Region" and " Key Trunk Road Network Planning of the Tibet Autonomous Region ".
In 2023, 202 rural road projects will be launched in townships and administrative villages in Tibet, and 220 existing projects will be further advanced, in a bid to connect four townships and 210 administrative villages with hardened roads.
