In the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley, the unique calls of the "highland spirits" can be heard as winter arrives. These are the black-necked cranes, known for their distinct behavioral pattern and heightened activity during the early morning and evening. With the arrival of the cold winter after the autumn harvest, these cranes freely roam the vast fields and wetlands of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, feeding on leftover barley grains, small plants, and insects. The flocks of black-necked cranes taking flight from time to time add vitality and liveliness to the winter in Shigatse.
Samdrubze, situated at the confluence of the Yarlung Zangbo River and Nianchu River, is the location with the largest number of black-necked cranes in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley. Its unique natural conditions make it a prime wintering ground for these "highland spirits." During winter, hundreds of black-necked cranes can be observed here, along with thousands of wild animals such as bar-headed geese that are foraging and reproducing.
The black-necked crane is a native species in China and the only crane species that breeds and thrives on the plateau. It is a rare and endangered species unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and is classified as a first-class protected animal in China. Among the Tibetan people, it is considered an auspicious symbol due to its lifelong monogamy, which represents steadfast love. Black-necked cranes usually inhabit wetlands, grasslands, and fields at altitudes above 3,000 meters. These areas provide them with a broad view and fresh air, creating a favorable environment for their survival.
During the 10th Party Congress of the Tibet autonomous region, the strategic goal of "focusing on creating a national ecological civilization highland and striving to lead the construction of ecological civilization in the country" was proposed. In line with this goal, the Black-necked Crane Nature Reserve was established, and efforts to strengthen the publicity of laws and regulations, as well as the supervision of nature reserves, were made. The entire region has made significant efforts to promote the construction of an ecological civilization highland, with Samdrubze district becoming an important showcase for the Beautiful China initiative and the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
These precious birds are not only national treasures of China but also part of the world's natural heritage. Currently, the population of Black-necked cranes wintering in the Shigatse area has doubled from 4,240 in 2007 to 8,476. The wintering habitats and surrounding wetlands of these birds have been effectively protected and restored, achieving the goal of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The sight of cranes dancing on the plateau can be seen everywhere, and the concept of ecological conservation is deeply rooted in people's hearts.
