Xizang is setting a strong example in balancing environmental preservation with economic growth.

In Amdo county, located at over 5,000 meters above sea level and at the northern edge of Xizang's power grid, construction is underway on a groundbreaking 100-megawatt molten salt solar thermal power plant.

This is part of Amdo's integrated solar energy project, which combines 100MW of solar thermal power with 800MW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity. The project is expected to connect to the grid by October 2026.

According to Liu Wenyuan, the project's safety manager, the solar thermal power plant will generate power for 15–16 hours daily, with a storage capacity of 800 megawatt-hours per day. It will enhance the northern Xizang power grid's capacity by 200 MWh, alleviating winter power shortages in the region.

Xizang's green efforts this year also include piloting forestry and grassland carbon sink trading, fostering smart agriculture, and reducing carbon emissions across industries, urban development, transportation, and public institutions.

The region is also capitalizing on its abundant natural resources—water, wind, and solar—to expand clean energy initiatives, such as a 1,200-MWh wind power project and a 750-MWh solar thermal station.

By championing clean energy and emerging industries, Xizang is building a model for sustainable development while strengthening its ecological legacy.
