During the 2025 May Day holiday, Xizang autonomous region experienced a tourism surge, receiving 1.56 million visits, a 16.24-percent increase from last year.
Tourism revenue also hit a new high, reaching 1.12 billion yuan ($155.34 million), up 15.18 percent. Lhasa's star-rated hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 55 to 60 percent, with Xizang residents making up 65 to 70 percent of travelers.
Flight bookings to Xizang rose 5 percent, and inbound travel orders surged 59 percent. Popular destinations included Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Basum Lake, Mount Qomolangma, and Tibet Museum. Lhasa remained a favorite, with flight orders increasing 2 percent and inbound tourism jumping 66 percent.
Tourism trends are shifting from sightseeing to interactive experiences. Travelers embraced fruit-picking, cultural tours, and rural educational programs, reflecting a preference for customized travel. Families increasingly opted for natural and historical sites over amusement parks. Tibet Museum saw a rise in visitors, with parents eager to educate children about the region's rich history.
With strong tourism growth and evolving travel trends, Xizang continues to captivate domestic and international visitors. As the holiday concluded, Xizang is set to enhance its appeal with world-class landscapes and culture.
