The renewable energy sector in the Xizang autonomous region reached a new milestone in mid-May, with green power trading topping 100 million kilowatt-hours for the first time.

The achievement was galvanized by China's national power grid and key electricity trading platforms – including the Beijing Power Exchange Center and regional branches of State Grid Northwest and Southwest.

By the end of 2024, Xizang had rapidly expanded its solar and wind power capacity – with renewables accounting for over half of total installed electricity generation, creating a clean energy-driven system.

In the current year, the autonomous region's energy authorities have focused on boosting green power utilization. They've conducted four bilateral transactions to increase renewable energy production by 79 million kWh, benefiting 14 electricity generators and 33 users.

Xizang has also leveraged its excess transmission capacity from the Qinghai-Xizang and Sichuan-Xizang power networks to deliver 27 million kWh of green energy to Beijing, as well as to Jiangsu province and Anhui province, reducing carbon emissions by 20,600 metric tons and generating 6 million yuan ($834,207) in economic benefits.

Looking ahead, Xizang aims to extend market reach, enhance green energy certifications and deepen its role in China's unified electricity market – further boosting its renewable energy leadership.
