A freight train recently arrived at the Shigatse West Railway freight yard carrying 486 metric tons of curtains, hardware, shoes, and daily goods. Loaded in 18 standard 40-foot containers, the cargo was quickly transferred by road to Nepal via the Zhangmu Port, highlighting the increasing diversity and efficiency of China-Nepal trade.
Under the Belt and Road Initiative, railway logistics has become a key connector for South Asia, with the Qinghai-Xizang and Lhasa-Shigatse lines now enabling faster and more cost-effective transport than traditional routes. Bulk commodities like grain and new energy vehicles regularly reach Shigatse before crossing into Nepal, helping Chinese exporters tap into new market opportunities.
The Shigatse freight yard plays a crucial role by upgrading its logistics through streamlining container handling, improving warehousing, and integrating multimodal transport. Manager Geng Liuyan noted steady growth in cargo volume and category diversity, reflecting the evolving nature of China-Nepal trade.
Gemo Longrui Trading Co is among the businesses benefiting from tailored "shared container export" solutions. Their multi-category shipments — ranging from popular curtains and hardware to newly added shoes — have seen strong demand in Nepal. Plans are underway to export food and glassware later this year.
With railway logistics advancing and regional connections strengthening, Shigatse is fast becoming the Xizang autonomous region's gateway for South Asian trade, driving economic integration and cross-border collaboration.
